Producing Ammonium Nitrate
Producing ammonium nitrate
Nitric acid and ammonia can react together in an acid-base process to form the salt, ammonium nitrate (\(\text{NH}_{4}\text{NO}_{3}\)). Ammonium nitrate is soluble in water and is often used in fertilizers. The reaction is as follows:
\(\text{NH}_{3}(\text{l}) + \text{HNO}_{3}(\text{l})\) \(\to\) \(\text{NH}_{4}\text{NO}_{3}(\text{s})\)
Ammonium nitrate presented as a) the structural formula, b) a three-dimensional molecular representation and c) solid crystals.
