There are three main determinants of population size, growth and composition in a given country. These three factors are:
<h3>Birth Rate:</h3>
The birth rate of a country refers to the rate at which children are being given birth to in a country. Generally, high birth rate may lead to an increase in population or over-population while low birth rate can lead to low population. Birth rate can be influenced by the following:

<li>Early marriage: In many communities in developing nations or Islamic regions, people encourage early marriage and this leads to an increase in population as many children are being given birth to.</li>
<li>Desire for large families: In most communities in developing nations and some races, people tend to have many children as this places them in a special class or gives them better grounds of residency.</li>
<li>Religious beliefs: While certain religions, e.g. Christianity, discourage polygamy, others like Islam encourage marrying of many wives that will give birth to too many children.</li>
<li>Improved medical services: As a result of improved medical services, death rate reduces while birth rate is boosted.</li>
</ol>
Improved standard of living: This encourages men to marry more wives in favourable communities, thereby increasing birth rate. It also encourages the birth of many children since there are resources to cater for the needs of the children.
