Nigeria became a republic on the 1st of October 1963 because even after her independence in 1960, the queen of England was still the head of state. But in 1963 she ceased to be.

Some students might be wondering whether the correct answer here is supposed to be October 1, 1960. Well, according to the history, Nigeria became a British protectorate in 1901. Colonization lasted until 1960, when an independence movement succeeded in gaining Nigeria its independence. Nigeria first became a republic in 1963, but succumbed to military rule three years later after a bloody coup d'état. In other words, Nigeria gained independence on October 1, 1960 but became a republic on October 1, 1963.
