27-x+x+18-x+2 (The "2" represents no. of those that failed both)= 40
45+2-x= 40
47-x= 40
Collect like terms;
x= 47-40
Therefore, x=7.

The question says 2 failed maths and phy therefore: 38 students passed
(27-n)+(18-n)+n=38
27-n+18-n+n=38
27+18-n-n+n=38
45-n=38
n=45-38
n=7

The answer is 7. 2 is not the amount of students who passed both, it is the amount of students who failed both i.e (Physics U Mathematics)' complement. So it is meant to be out of the circles but within the box in the Venn diagram.
Another way of confirming - When you add 3 (your answer) with the numbers given, you don't get 40, you'd get 36. The correct answer is Option C which is 7.
